Upgrading FAQ

This FAQ is designed to help answer some basic upgrade questions and provide tips for people who are migrating to a newer version.

Q: What is the most important thing to do when upgrading a Safety Software product?

The most important thing to do when upgrading any software is to make sure that you back up your data before you do anything! This ensures that data can be recovered in the event that something does not go according to plan.

Q: How do I backup my data before I upgrade?

There are two ways to backup data before upgrading. But first you must be certain of your data's location. To do so, in Windows Explorer, locate the Idapi folder (usually C:Idapi). Double click bdecfg.exe, when the window opens, click Aliases tab (lower left). Under Alias Names, click Database. Note the path listed on the right - this is where all data is stored. 

The first way to backup data is to simply make a copy of the Database folder within the SOS directory (see previous paragraph for help determining this location).  Do not rename the folder, but simply "copy" it and "paste" to another drive, another folder or burn to a CD.

The second way to backup data is to exit the program and click Ok on the "QuickBak" window. Be sure to note the path where the backup will be placed. Verify that the backup was successful by browsing to the path listed on the "Quickbak" window and locate the .zip file.

Q: How do I begin the upgrade?

To begin the upgrade, place the upgrade CD in the CD/DVD drive or double click the downloaded upgrade file. Follow the on-screen prompts.

In multi-user environments (concurrent and non-concurrent), be sure to upgrade the Server FIRST and then upgrade each workstation.

Q: I upgraded my software and now I can't see my data! What can I do?

Not "seeing" your data after an upgrade is usually caused by either installing the upgrade into the wrong directory or by selecting the incorrect "upgrade" option after starting the software for the first time.

In either case, the data can be restored and the upgrade can be re-installed. Either copy the backup of the Database directory and paste to the SOS folder or, if you used Quickbak, use a program like Winzip to unzip the zip file and extract the contents to the SOSDatabase directory.  Then re-install the upgrade.

Q: I upgraded my software, now it's asking for a registration number - where do I go to get it?

Upgrading to a new version of the software does require a new registration number. The registration number can be obtained by registering online at http://www.safesoft.com/safesoft_register/
